Revelation 5 tells about John's description of seeing Jesus Christ appeared as a slain-Lamb standing between God's throne, the four living creatures, and in the midst of the twenty-four elders. John saw then a scroll in God's right hand. The scroll had writing in it and on its back. The scroll was sealed with seven seals. And an angel proclaimed loudly who was worthy to open the scroll and look into it. Because no man in heaven, in earth, or under the earth, was able to open the book, even to look on it. One of the elders told John not to continue crying, but that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David had prevailed. He takes the book immediately praise and worship begins.

The Greek root word sphazō is the word for "slain", which may also be translated as "butchered or slaughtered", since Jesus Christ endured the violent death on the cross to take away our sin. Lambs and other animals served as a sacrifice for sin in Old Testament times, but were only a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, God's Lamb, who shed His blood as the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 9:11–12).
